Apart from making some shortbread to celebrate a good friends upcoming wedding I have made nothing. Creativity seems to have completely left me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">So for now I am going to have a break from this blog as I am not doing anything interesting to write about. Once baby has arrived and we have settled into our new life together I am sure creativity will return and I will be able to start this up again. See you soon....</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Excitingly <a href="http://hollypprojects.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/tweed-and-coffee-sack-chair.html">this</a> chair went up to the shop in Stonehaven but that is all the news for this week.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Of course, my most creative project has been going on for 9 months now. If these two photos of me, in the same dress, are anything to go by there has been a lot of creativity going on! Exactly one week till our due date...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

When we were looking at readings for our wedding last year we came across the sweetest quote from one of my favourite books, which instantly reminded me of us. We didn't use the quote on the day but Mr Briggs remembered it and had an original print made up especially for me. Such a thoughtful present. There were tears!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

We had bought some bunting wall stickers from a fabulous website called <a href="http://www.ferm-living.com/">Ferm Living</a>. I was really impressed by the huge choice they had (we got ours in their sale), their promptness in posting our order out from Denmark, and the fact that the kids collection is not just blue and pink babyish stuff. I would quite happily have any of their kids <a href="http://www.ferm-living.com/kids-wallpaper/">wallpaper</a> in my home. We then bought some bird stickers to liven it up a bit more (from a website I wasn't so impressed with so I won't mention them here, but the stickers are lovely!).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">The beauty of these stickers is that you can arrange them any way you like depending on the space you have (the above picture shows a tree made out of left over bunting strips), they are really easy to put up, and they can be taken down without leaving a big mess on your walls. She kept me company on the sofa in my hugely pregnant state, helped me bake triple chocolate brownies, she even walked the dog for me and made my dinner! Truly the perfect pregnancy companion.</div><div style="text-align: center;">The rest of the week was spent celebrating the upcoming wedding of another good friend. We had a wonderfully creative afternoon taking part in a fascinator class, making our own fascinators to wear to the wedding. Here is my colourful creation. Now I just need to find a dress to match!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZFgi6JgJIONy3iayA2k9mh_Qa3D8CCY0E0X1ODON9xMg9xPEBssFcRlRrCuc3VpE6YleGI_Ye33OJsBgpGVGVFjAuVZ4zVlWgHIUuCNzqxM1c-Z0S5I6a_ARWwCVqAd9E9khFJmyGzjs/s1600/IMG_0379.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZFgi6JgJIONy3iayA2k9mh_Qa3D8CCY0E0X1ODON9xMg9xPEBssFcRlRrCuc3VpE6YleGI_Ye33OJsBgpGVGVFjAuVZ4zVlWgHIUuCNzqxM1c-Z0S5I6a_ARWwCVqAd9E9khFJmyGzjs/s320/IMG_0379.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmr4CAuvOrOkB8z3q0Q62THzjxV5lv14v6x2zbHt9_2DipzhX_EgeT9qeKk6KS7_GMzFOLtKvDrU2l7dadkytSsSFBaIgSvCDWNLZxnGKGKIH9kzI0Zgyjyc6ftWYU3m2IL1m7SJIFsrw/s1600/IMG_0380.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmr4CAuvOrOkB8z3q0Q62THzjxV5lv14v6x2zbHt9_2DipzhX_EgeT9qeKk6KS7_GMzFOLtKvDrU2l7dadkytSsSFBaIgSvCDWNLZxnGKGKIH9kzI0Zgyjyc6ftWYU3m2IL1m7SJIFsrw/s320/IMG_0380.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We were also asked to take a memento of our friend so I made a brooch using material that I had used on a previous project for her, and an acorn shaped button to symbolise her own <a href="http://www.fromlittleacornsfurniture.co.uk/">furniture company</a>. The instructions came from a great book called <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Crafty-Minx-Kelly-Doust/dp/1741964954/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332084796&sr=8-1">The Crafty Minx</a> by Kelly Doust, which includes all sorts of handmade treasures from doorstops to tepees, and brooches to nappy bags. I forgot to take a photo of the brooch though, so instead here is a photo of Henny, and one of my huge bump taken over a week ago - I'm even bigger now!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Though as I have made shortbread and lemon polenta cake with the KitchenAid in the past 24 hours I suppose there has been a fair amount of creativity! It really is a classic piece of kitchen equipment. Not only does it look beautiful but it is so easy to use, and amazingly quiet. As we are expecting many visitors after the arrival of Baby Briggs, at least I know it will be easy for me to bake something yummy to feed them all!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">As you can see we still have the <strike>horrible </strike>retro floor tiles, the splashbacks haven't been fitted yet and the blind for the window hasn't arrived, but wow what a difference! It is now such a bright, spacious room and we love being in it. The gloss units reflect all the light, the cupboards are so well designed for space that there are even cupboards with nothing in (yet!), and I love the little things like having space under the sink for our bins to fit in. Admittedly, if you spill anything on a white worktop it needs mopping up straight away, but actually I suppose you should really do that anyway?!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">The kitchen is now mostly finished, and we have been really impressed with the speed and hard work of our <a href="http://www.hamiltonpm.co.uk/">builders</a>. They ensured that our oven and sink were fitted so we could use them over the weekend, but until it is totally finished we don't want to cause any mess! This time next week though we will have a brand new finished kitchen, hurrah!!</div>hollyphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15400423658763592209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290086077654482042.post-72585105657409619442012-02-18T06:15:00.000-08:002012-02-18T06:15:26.078-08:00Sweet Smelling Post Office Table<div style="text-align: center;">Baby Briggs' room no longer smells of oil! I ordered some foam and upholstered the piece of plywood in the parcel shelf with PVC to make one big changing mat, which meant it smelt like foam for a while. Then I waxed the table base, which made it smell lovely. Then I lined the shelves with pretty polka-dot scented drawer liners from <a href="http://www.lauraashley.com/home-fragrance/waterlily-drawer-liners/invt/3521004">Laura Ashley</a>. So now the whole room smells like flowers - result!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I didn't really take any photos while I did it because it is exactly the same as my nursery chair! The only extra thing this one needed was a spring in the back being put on. As you can see in the photo below the bottom spring had fallen off on one side. This was because the eye that the hook on the end of the spring was attached to had come off.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZcC5D7vVNOCYIr3AQQHFWbRvghJ4kXzjFQ7FYrQ1TlhIY25V8HAL6z1BLqinenPz5D4WPhZZsEjWvBDuKIVE5s-q_CD7ZH4Im9NzxvE3IvwRmEIgQsfyae-JLB7bUFEuw6xUOJIXolU/s1600/IMG_0180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZcC5D7vVNOCYIr3AQQHFWbRvghJ4kXzjFQ7FYrQ1TlhIY25V8HAL6z1BLqinenPz5D4WPhZZsEjWvBDuKIVE5s-q_CD7ZH4Im9NzxvE3IvwRmEIgQsfyae-JLB7bUFEuw6xUOJIXolU/s320/IMG_0180.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So I drilled into the wood and attached a new eye before rehooking the spring on.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

It has pigeon holes and a parcel shelf and Mother Goose has always been convinced it would make a fabulous changing table. So we were all very excited that it would finally be able to come out of my parents old barn and be put to good use in Baby Briggs' room.</div><div style="text-align: center;">My dad sanded it, put it in his car and drove it all the way up to Edinburgh. There was then much huffing and puffing, and groaning and grunting, as Dad and Mr Briggs carried it up the stairs to our first floor flat. Although it separated into two parts this was a pretty hefty bit of furniture. Here is Dad reassembling it in Baby Briggs' room.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8E45gNoZVNH5eWI6jn6H4zUMHYtOAB1iQTFjR9_7NR4tG4MmKBgVBhf1EmhdE6h305sFx2neBEfIUkibarCkOwXPjCi5wQ2Glei4UpRHhz9k_4Dsr62wrdXQY5nZNtQ6NXe4JOm0XQ2s/s1600/IMG_0173.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8E45gNoZVNH5eWI6jn6H4zUMHYtOAB1iQTFjR9_7NR4tG4MmKBgVBhf1EmhdE6h305sFx2neBEfIUkibarCkOwXPjCi5wQ2Glei4UpRHhz9k_4Dsr62wrdXQY5nZNtQ6NXe4JOm0XQ2s/s320/IMG_0173.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPu7HULpoFRit7xKiQfT4TONURc_ECAsQ1XC-oOSV03u5Bv55u-O8S_lrLboDQPRriRpppVS2-vSeXIn1FK-yNxQvNCvVe_D4ozNoJJORqT024ICYPLdvaCusEhVnX3tOYniWYLrYWDcA/s1600/IMG_0176.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPu7HULpoFRit7xKiQfT4TONURc_ECAsQ1XC-oOSV03u5Bv55u-O8S_lrLboDQPRriRpppVS2-vSeXIn1FK-yNxQvNCvVe_D4ozNoJJORqT024ICYPLdvaCusEhVnX3tOYniWYLrYWDcA/s320/IMG_0176.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The bottom of the parcel shelf was still a little grubby looking even after sanding so Dad fitted a piece of plywood to cover it. </div><div style="text-align: center;">G.B is inscribed underneath the parcel shelf. For Great Britain perhaps? Or Great Briggs?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirCMqmUmfMW_TlLDCViThsfqyg6M7zA32EtmGKYs3Fd6y0_ZrEGzjX7DOH65ZaKwa3kih8c4rlym1fNzK9FNk-QvKZ962XDDlHGFaB13de2D74BVvU3loUj4rt4GhCjufQMwc6lLjS71I/s1600/IMG_0187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirCMqmUmfMW_TlLDCViThsfqyg6M7zA32EtmGKYs3Fd6y0_ZrEGzjX7DOH65ZaKwa3kih8c4rlym1fNzK9FNk-QvKZ962XDDlHGFaB13de2D74BVvU3loUj4rt4GhCjufQMwc6lLjS71I/s320/IMG_0187.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The only problem we have with this lovely old piece of furniture is that after it was used as a post office table it was used by a farmer to store his old tractor parts. This resulted in some of the shelves being covered in oil, which has seeped into the wood. The day after we put it in Baby Briggs' room, Mr Briggs and I realised that the room smelt like an old workshop! Although it's quite a nice old smell - it reminds Mr Briggs of his grandads shed - I can't imagine it will be very good for a tiny baby to be breathing in the smell of oil, and it is getting stronger! I tried covering the whole piece of furniture in baking powder (and bicarbonate of soda because I wasn't sure which one you are meant to use!), as this is meant to soak up smells. Maybe I didn't use enough or leave it on long enough because it still smelt. </div><div style="text-align: center;">So then I bought a carbon activated blanket. Apparently activated carbon, or activated charcoal, is extremely porous and therefore it's increased surface area allows it to absorb pollutants and odours. Supposedly all I need to do is leave this blanket on the piece of furniture that smells for 12 hours and the blanket should soak up the smell...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHOSjwql6C66z025t4mGGCjfoS0ZZzbxF5QnswiJ8CoWP5ze5R75uapicDAQ65uztPbg86HwSO7ovOB6Rt2vof2-vz6P0Xc2zpe8pYEkV00IM-JxFlo1L0CFKQ-F_9UgOz3yRBOtdwSDk/s1600/IMG_0186.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHOSjwql6C66z025t4mGGCjfoS0ZZzbxF5QnswiJ8CoWP5ze5R75uapicDAQ65uztPbg86HwSO7ovOB6Rt2vof2-vz6P0Xc2zpe8pYEkV00IM-JxFlo1L0CFKQ-F_9UgOz3yRBOtdwSDk/s320/IMG_0186.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Fingers crossed that this works, or maybe we will have to redo Baby Briggs' room in a tractor theme, complete with smell! If anyone has any other suggestions for how to get rid of the smell of oil please do let me know as I really don't want to have to get rid of this gorgeous piece of furniture.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">On a slightly different, but still unexpected, note, work to get our home finished in time for Baby Briggs' arrival continues. This week we had new shower fittings put in but when the tiler came to remove the tiles ready for the new ones, a supposedly quick and easy job, all the plaster work fell off the wall!! As I wanted to keep one in our nursery and sell the other, I decided to do mine first so that if I made any mistakes on the first one then I would know how to do the second one better. I am so glad I decided to do this as I have already had to redo a couple of bits! </div><div style="text-align: center;">It took me nearly two days to strip, due to stubborn staples and an ever growing bump getting in the way of bending and general flexibility! I haven't done enough of the new upholstery (that I'm happy with) to post photos yet but here is how the chair looked while being stripped.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I already know that I like organisation and routine, and with a baby arriving in April, I feel that 2012 needs to be the year that I make every effort to keep organised and be as productive as possible. That includes this blog, so I will be trying my hardest to update it every week... or maybe every two!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So far this year Mr Briggs and I have painted Baby Briggs' room and got started on some decorations (these will be posted soon), had a couple of days romantic break in London, ordered a beautiful cot, looked at pushchairs and ordered a new kitchen. For me one of the most exciting things has been that my tub chair has been sold in the shop in Stonehaven, and someone even went in and asked if there were any more! I can't explain how exciting it is that someone liked a piece of my furniture enough to buy it, and it has really inspired me to get on with more upholstery this year...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So the past two days I have been working on a headboard for our bedroom. This is how our bed used to look, a bit dull.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-E98I-YTrCK-HWu2mxbRFhSTmEjp-GP5bRQ66BbhV6Kq3HVPWQcsJFJq1fkla6xl5HLsXMiGx1EaKRAKXa8WFkA2rKytRvZDJj5XAxoDmhbWziDcP9X3IrABMWb3nZmKsefxCgzxTZwE/s1600/IMG_0049.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-E98I-YTrCK-HWu2mxbRFhSTmEjp-GP5bRQ66BbhV6Kq3HVPWQcsJFJq1fkla6xl5HLsXMiGx1EaKRAKXa8WFkA2rKytRvZDJj5XAxoDmhbWziDcP9X3IrABMWb3nZmKsefxCgzxTZwE/s320/IMG_0049.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"></div><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">So I bought some mdf from the nice people at <a href="http://www.walkertimbergroup.com/walkertimber/depots">Walker Woodstock</a> - I use the Gorgie road depot where they are all very friendly and will cut your wood to whatever size you need. The full size sheet wouldn't fit in our car so I had it cut in half and when I got home drilled some mdf struts to the back to put it back together, and then glued some foam to it. The foam was ordered from <a href="http://www.efoam.co.uk/foamshapes.php">eFoam</a>, who I would definitely recommend as the site is simple to use and they always deliver really quickly.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy7cbFj3SZehUoRf4XEb0Hgn62VnkJFvY1DxvFPHH6L-hrizcPGWtr9U1yl9ASoMoWKgIvjpIylIEQRPitmcKfO-xf7gSHCuP4_a5MBH384ZUjIf4AvwuWI27DuJZpZlpVLHZiITNlVHg/s1600/IMG_0051.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy7cbFj3SZehUoRf4XEb0Hgn62VnkJFvY1DxvFPHH6L-hrizcPGWtr9U1yl9ASoMoWKgIvjpIylIEQRPitmcKfO-xf7gSHCuP4_a5MBH384ZUjIf4AvwuWI27DuJZpZlpVLHZiITNlVHg/s320/IMG_0051.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZxECYDh7nIxJTTsCU7Tip6sMZpzYt9ATteD89jYp5-9sT3RWpWITSNzYHG-CnzRPlb47zxRqsWa1261X3H80HVP_4_q0CYenUhSrDnhfYNfb6iOxqMZbc69z2TU-zUWMikwaICGOtvsI/s1600/IMG_0061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZxECYDh7nIxJTTsCU7Tip6sMZpzYt9ATteD89jYp5-9sT3RWpWITSNzYHG-CnzRPlb47zxRqsWa1261X3H80HVP_4_q0CYenUhSrDnhfYNfb6iOxqMZbc69z2TU-zUWMikwaICGOtvsI/s320/IMG_0061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Next I attached my material - "Linen Stripe" from Laura Ashley. I like working with stripes as they give you something to work to when attaching material to a straight edge.</div><div style="text-align: center;">We don't have much space either side of our bed so instead of having lamps either side we bought some clip on lights from <a href="http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00169635/">Ikea</a>. I attached two strips of mdf to the back of the headboard so that these could be clamped to the back and allow the light to shine out round the sides of the bed.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">The artwork in the last photo is a 19th century Japanese block print that I bought from Liberty in London (with some very generous Liberty gift coins a kind friend gave us for a wedding present). I bought it specifically to go in our newly decorated bedroom and was worried the colours wouldn't be quite right - I would say they are pretty much perfect! </div>hollyphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15400423658763592209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290086077654482042.post-19434893917358907512011-11-28T07:22:00.000-08:002011-11-28T07:22:23.238-08:00New(ish) Coffee Table<div style="text-align: center;">The first piece of furniture that Mr Briggs and I bought together was a Victorian scrub top kitchen table. The legs weren't really equal and there was a huge bow in the top of it but we loved it. And it was while eating lunch at this table that Mr Briggs proposed to me. So when we decided to redo our kitchen and realised that our table wouldn't go with the modern new look we had a dilemma. With a baby on the way we also needed a bigger table as our original one only sat 4 and we anticipate many guests and a growing brood over the next few years! So we found a beautiful (new) oak table for our kitchen with no funny angles or wobbles.</div><div style="text-align: center;">And then, we made our lovely old table into a coffee table!! We did feel a bit bad sawing the legs off an antique piece of furniture but we knew we would never again need a small kitchen table and couldn't bare to part with such a sentimental piece. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

How exciting! You can see these comfy cushions in John A W Briggs of Stonehaven (yes we are related!). He is actually a Persian rug specialist but has kindly offered to see how some of my creations sell - the tweed tub chair is up there too. We will be going up there with some more cushions, and possibly some dining chairs, in a couple of weeks so I will post some photos of the shop then. For now here are the latest cushions.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZPyGxugd2SjeSZ67lixTe1grhPQdbYemnQ9sslSCuTaMRnOFh4eiDaPLNcKPUWmrBismaLdpH6hyphenhyphenTvKCwOGyVb85LjMcZkUbMetLBB5-Fn6amdQOZgwwN4X1sjjva_YEFCUwq6TsV6OM/s1600/IMG_1295.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZPyGxugd2SjeSZ67lixTe1grhPQdbYemnQ9sslSCuTaMRnOFh4eiDaPLNcKPUWmrBismaLdpH6hyphenhyphenTvKCwOGyVb85LjMcZkUbMetLBB5-Fn6amdQOZgwwN4X1sjjva_YEFCUwq6TsV6OM/s320/IMG_1295.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />

I have no idea what I am doing wrong but every time I write a comment, pick an id (it doesn't matter what id I choose) and hit enter, the page refreshes and my comment isn't there. So this post is to say thank you for those lovely comments Sam and Zoe, and to let you all know how much I really appreciate kind words about my work, whether they are on here, on facebook, or in person. When you've been working hard on something and putting all your creativity and personality into that work, it is so heartwarming to have someone tell you that they like it. Suddenly all the hard work and frustration becomes worthwhile. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Thank you!</div>hollyphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15400423658763592209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290086077654482042.post-66075003517920839852011-10-14T04:27:00.000-07:002011-10-14T04:27:33.492-07:00My Kitchen Chair<div style="text-align: center;">I have always wanted a kitchen big enough to hold a dining table and sofa so that everyone can gather in one room comfortably - like my mums kitchen! Our kitchen won't hold a sofa but it does have space for a chair. Over the summer I bought this lovely old thing...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYOK6ICa7KPmta5M1FmVAdX6z7wfaQpUIxseZDeFJUpgkxlmaqHtaxHqOH_BzT11LV7isuRJVubCB0C4hBNgFOfCaogWV0gQzNBJ_W0UN0w6GtkRCzGgEdhg7-4mW9N7rLA_v-t_f_XNI/s1600/IMG_1253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYOK6ICa7KPmta5M1FmVAdX6z7wfaQpUIxseZDeFJUpgkxlmaqHtaxHqOH_BzT11LV7isuRJVubCB0C4hBNgFOfCaogWV0gQzNBJ_W0UN0w6GtkRCzGgEdhg7-4mW9N7rLA_v-t_f_XNI/s320/IMG_1253.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />

</a></div><div style="text-align: center;">And in the process got my fingers spiked by many needles and found this odd collection...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif9DRQRK-lvQ67XUC8bA9SLPN3R_YnoOE1uPF3COiNvgLzjgtxH2YWXU0A1KlEvCshs2lG78HbcEPDkdAKtSZj5ImsFe69DePhCVdFqAmu4EckuP6_YcvGDGAJKAVeTc_V3sMiyGl55h4/s1600/IMG_1256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif9DRQRK-lvQ67XUC8bA9SLPN3R_YnoOE1uPF3COiNvgLzjgtxH2YWXU0A1KlEvCshs2lG78HbcEPDkdAKtSZj5ImsFe69DePhCVdFqAmu4EckuP6_YcvGDGAJKAVeTc_V3sMiyGl55h4/s320/IMG_1256.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I knew that I had lots of gorgeous Harris Tweed from our honeymoon, but I didn't have enough to cover the whole chair. So I picked a green and brown tweed that matched the old coffee bean sacks I had bought for <a href="http://hollypprojects.blogspot.com/2011/03/coffee-bean-chairs.html">these</a> chairs. The sacks were a bit of a nightmare to work with and there was the potential for it to look awful but Henny and I gave it our best shot.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Luckily these have all been, mostly, to give away so I won't get too fat. You can see how to make this most tasty shortbread <a href="http://charlieandevelynstable.blogspot.com/2011/09/shortbread-for-weekend.html">here</a>.</div>hollyphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15400423658763592209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290086077654482042.post-86796836399592571862011-09-14T02:11:00.000-07:002011-09-14T02:11:57.142-07:00A Birthday Project<div style="text-align: center;">For my birthday in May a good friend gave me a great book. <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Home-made-Vintage-Christina-Strutt/dp/1906525714/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315989445&sr=1-1">Home-Made Vintage</a> by Christina Strutt is an easy to follow guide with over 40 sewing projects, ranging from cushion covers and simple curtains, to dolls, bags and skirts. As it is a <a href="http://www.cabbagesandroses.com/shop/100701/homeware">Cabbages&Roses</a> book, it is filled with beautiful photos of vintage style fabrics and has some great ideas for personalised gifts. Projects range from simple to time consuming, but every one is "do-able", with a little patience, even if you've never used a sewing machine before.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">As my friends birthday is a few months after mine I had enough time to try out one of the projects as a present. She had already pointed out the tied tablecloth and as she is a fantastic cook and <a href="http://www.charlieandevelynstable.blogspot.com/">hostess</a>, something for her kitchen table was most appropriate. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">As the book has such good instructions I won't explain how to make the tablecloth, but here are some photos of what you can do with just a couple of metres of your favourite fabric and 3 metres of ribbon.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Not any more. We managed to get ourselves an ex-display bargain whilst buying dinner last week in our local Tesco! The kind man who helped us even proudly threw in the headboard free to seal the deal. I could not bring myself to tell him that the tired looking cheap plastic faux leather headboard would not be going anywhere near my new home. But once we got it all home I realised that I own a staple gun and a cupboard full of material - genius!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"> This week I got the chance to work on two chairs. It was quite a challenge since the client had chosen a luxuriously thick patterned material of which there was enough by millimetres, there was so much piping to stitch, and I had to make the second chair look exactly like the first!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I started by stripping the original material off. These chairs were modernly upholstered, i.e with foam and staples. I found a ten pence piece inside with 1992 as the date - though obviously this means they could have been upholstered any time since then, I like to think that someone put the coin in as a memento of that particular year. That would mean I was just six and still aspiring to be a pig farmer when these chairs were last worked on, never imagining that I would grow up to be an upholsterer. Anyway...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Modern upholstery is notoriously hard to strip since you have to use so many staples to keep the material in place. It is difficult to get your staple remover under the old staples and results in many blisters - very tiring work...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Once the material was off I separated each piece and used them as a template to cut the new material. This was tricky as the pattern needed to match up when attached to the chair, and due to the amount of material there was no room for error.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaRBNhg0eH3bYfvx6lohk65ePkjglaLw9hmhCQhjWd4nQZMomxn25Jf15N38pX51ptIuDG8ofctQAqnMbcS4xbPzHqQ0_rqTQdktYKo_IGDlVqBnPk3N8eeeYL0jsBFmQYJAe7KpNDKnA/s1600/IMG_1114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaRBNhg0eH3bYfvx6lohk65ePkjglaLw9hmhCQhjWd4nQZMomxn25Jf15N38pX51ptIuDG8ofctQAqnMbcS4xbPzHqQ0_rqTQdktYKo_IGDlVqBnPk3N8eeeYL0jsBFmQYJAe7KpNDKnA/s320/IMG_1114.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">When the material was cut I started stitching the panels together and stitching the piping. I strongly believed that practise makes perfect and the more piping I stitch the better it will get. That was until an upholsterer friend of mine, who is a pro on her sewing machine, told me that she still finds piping a nightmare. I fear I will eternally dread it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiybh7wKF28i1Z5NW3qmX-lm9CETR5_WaxK3XiiqdzWDChAlz_NQRn0RRPqcnMd3kR7i0fAiQLL5ytV401Dr5DX6rRzREdgef-XFHSoowVATrJzbxF6Dg5QmEWPuxeS3F_QQ8bdYJS5WVU/s1600/photo%252817%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br />
</a></div><div style="text-align: center;">But, once the stitching was all done I got onto the fun part. The seat material was temporary tacked (i.e with tacks not hammered in properly so they are easily removed to change things) so that I could get the pattern on evenly and pull the material tight. Once this was exactly how I wanted it I stapled it onto the frame. The arms went on next, again with temporary tacks to ensure both arms matched before being stapled. Then the seat back was stapled down and I hand stitched the piping edge to the edge running against the arms. Finally the back was attached and I glued on two lines of braiding to cover the staples.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Before I attached the new cover I strengthened the webbing to alleviate any sagging and added a little more stuffing. </div><div style="text-align: center;">The hardest part for me was stitching the piping as I had not had much experience with this. The back and arms of the chair are made up of three panels stitched together along two piping cords. The seat is made up of two panels stitched together, with the piping joining them along the front of the seat.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Once these had been stitched together I attached them to the chair using tacks, pulling the material as tight as possible. The back was then stitched together (another three panels, but no piping) and attached. This was then finished with decorative tacks.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"> Finally I replaced the old castors with some nice new shiny brass ones, and attached a dust cloth. The end result is a very cosy, solid chair that would look totally at home in a library, next to a roaring fire. Preferably with a good book and your favourite drink. For close ups of the material see <a href="http://hollypprojects.blogspot.com/2011/04/sneak-peak.html">here</a>.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
